Bringing clean
energy to Berne

Producing clean, renewable energy reducing harmful emissions affecting the health of New Yorkers.

About the Project

The Berne Solar project is proposed to be located at 28 Jansen Lane in the Town of Berne, New York. The project is in active development as we finalize the engineering design and site layout. This project is a community solar project, with no battery energy storage systems planned or proposed as part of this project. The Project will produce electricity from photovoltaic arrays and interconnect to the local distribution feeder to supply power to the grid.

The Project will generate clean, renewable power while reducing greenhouse gas emissions that impact the health of New Yorkers. It will create local jobs, attract millions of dollars in private investment, protect area flora and fauna, and provide reliable, long-term income for participating landowners—helping them preserve their land for future generations.

We are advancing the project through a phased development approach and working closely with the Town of Berne as we move through the local permitting process.

Why Solar?

Lower Energy Costs

Solar power is a reliable, fixed-cost energy source that strengthens America’s energy mix and helps lower energy costs for the long term.

Thoughtful Design

Solar projects run quietly and fit the landscape. Smart siting and screening keep them low profile. Managed vegetation can improve habitat, support wildlife, and strengthen biodiversity throughout the project life.

Economic Benefits

Beyond environmental benefits, solar farms contribute to rural economies—creating jobs, generating significant local revenue, and providing stable, supplemental income for landowners.

Clean Energy

The Project will provide a clean, renewable source of energy that will reduce carbon dioxide emissions and help achieve New York’s Climate Act goal of 70% renewable energy by 2030.

Press Coverage

The developer, RIC Energy, has been proactive in working with town leadership, neighbors, and infrastructure experts to ensure this project has minimal visibility from other’s properties, exceeded New York State’s fire codes, and follows the town’s zoning requirements. That level of accountability and financial responsibility should give neighbors peace of mind.

"As a fifth-generation family farmer in Berne, I believe it is time for our town to embrace smart opportunities that will contribute to our town’s revenue and support our taxpayers."

“We’re willing to work with them and put in an access road in a different location if it’s beneficial to them,” said Hillegas. “So we’re by no means set in stone on what we initiated with our plan. We’re able to mold and mend and work with everybody.”

RIC plans to proceed “as soon as the moratorium is lifted if the solar law hasn’t changed too much,” Hillegas told The Enterprise last fall. “We’ll have to re-evaluate that and, if they change the solar law, I think that will give us more insight into intentions.”

"Studies concluded that noise, glare, and environmental impacts would be negligible."

"The Berne Town Board has extended its year-long moratorium on solar facilities."

"The available evidence shows this project can fit within that landscape without changing the character residents value."

"Queirolo said further that the project would bring in $24,000 annually in tax revenue."
